Parents and students frequently need reminders as the new school year gets underway, including where to go for drop-off, what constitutes a fever, and, apparently, not to take part in the “One Chip Challenge,” which involves consuming hot chips. In particular, the single chip by Paqui – an American brand of tortilla chips made by Amplify Snack Brands.
Warning Against the Challenge
Parents and students are being warned by schools about the potential risks, which include hospitalization. For those who are unaware, the ‘One Chip Challenge’ requires the participant to consume a single chip containing Carolina Reaper and Scorpion peppers (one of the world’s hottest chili peppers). According to the rules, to take part in the challenge, one must refrain from eating or drinking anything for as long as possible and share a video of their reaction on social media.
As fun as it sounds, consuming a concentration of the two hottest peppers at once is a lot. The challenging chip does more than just make you cry and want to drink water. It will also make your tongue turn blue, but the side effects don’t end here, as some people who are more sensitive may need to be hospitalized. Paqui cautions that not everyone is a good fit for the task, and it shouldn’t be attempted by anyone who is:
- Sensitive to spicy foods
- Pregnant
- Allergic to peppers, nightshades, or capsaicin
- Has medical conditions
‘One Chip Challenge’ Disturbing Reports
Three students reportedly visited the hospital after the challenge at one middle school in Texas. Following the incident, the school district issued another warning to parents and students about the risks associated with the ‘One Chip Challenge’ trend.
Also, more than a dozen students at a Kentucky elementary school reportedly experienced symptoms ranging from vomiting to intense mouth burning. One of the students experienced breathing issues. In the meantime, a Colorado school banned the ‘One Chip Challenge’ and threatened students who disobeyed the regulations with expulsion.
